| Peripheries become the center is a most fitting
title for the participation of Iceland at the first Prague Biennale.
It almost seems that this country is actually on the outmost border
of any periphery; still it is in fact the center of the world in
many respects. The image of Iceland as the hip and happening center
of the world has recently been presented to the global masses. But
most interestingly — speaking of art — it is the center
of extreme energy, chaos and diversity.
The aim is to give an idea of the wide scene of the visual arts
in one very small country by bringing together artists as different
from each other as imaginable. Ásmundur Ámundsson,
Gabriéla Fridriksdottir, Unnar Örn, and The Icelandic
Love Corporation work in opposites. Outgoing charm against the meditation
of everyday life, embarrassment in interaction against beauty of
appearance, the fairytale idea of good and evil against the shading
of subjectivity. These artists will create the Iceland section of
the Biennale, a space of contrast and controversy — energy
will be its leitmotiv.
