Space and Subjectivity

curated by Lauri Firstenberg (Usa)

This exhibition intends to examine the dialectical relationship of space and subjectivity. The show features work that oscillates between visualizing particular regions inflected by specific cultural signifiers and imagining more anonymous zones of the “smooth world” (Hardt, Negri) that globalism propagates. Psychology, politics, tastes, fears, ideals and desires are articulated through space, as a kind of portraiture of place inflected by cultural legibility and contradiction. This exhibition attempts to investigate the interface between space and subjectivity that can either be named, identified, categorized or remains indeterminate.

From the global to the transnational, this exhibition speaks to the anxiety instigated by the conflicts between homogenization and difference in the constitution of identity. It reflects the expediency and the threat of fluid inscriptions of space and subjectivity, both concretely and metaphorically, at stake in the larger negotiation of local and global inflection and identification. From concrete cityscapes to abstract non-places, one cannot remove politic from site. While some artistic mediations focus on geographical specificity, other propose a kind of vague terrain, a flattened homogenizing view of international metropoles or suburbs, reiterating the redundancy and interchangeability of the global city or periphery. This exhibit proposes to investigate the relation of discourse to the real through artworks that question the forces of de-differentiation and pluralism attributed to contemporary postindustrial “world” culture. It is interested in geography as it is visually constructed according to a set of codes that determine location, and by extension, culture. This concern is investigated through a focus on landscape, architectural and spatial photography as portraiture and by exercising a grounding of identity in place.
