(Dis)Locations
curated by Julieta Gonzalez (Venezuela)

My choice of artists has been motivated by several factors. On the
one hand I wanted to include a strong representation of Venezuelan
artists, since, apart from a few exceptions, they seldom get to participate
in international events where their work can establish a dialogue
and confront work by other artists from around the world. I was interested
in the idea of the diaspora and how distance gives you a different
perspective on local reality. Living in the center you have to adapt
to another society, economy and politics; you have to make your work
readable. So in the end it’s not inclusion that we are talking
about, but rather adaptation and strategies of survival. The artists
in my selection either currently live abroad or have done so for a
long period of time during their career. They do not propose their
work as exotic or capitalize on their peripheral in a shallow way,
but rather use the lingua franca of international art to make an incisive
commentary and critique on issues of identity and difference. The
idea of dislocation is also present in the works and in the way each
of the artists addresses notions of space and location. An awareness
of the ‘location’ of the work not only inside the exhibition
space but also within the more general sphere of the art world is
an articulating thread in all these works.
