Differentia specifica
Curated by Judit Angel (Hungary)

In selecting these artists I was looking for presences
rather atypical for the Hungarian art scene, not so much trendy as
mainly peculiar artists. My search for the atypical is related to
the problematic aspect of what we call today the ‘profile,’
the individual characteristic of an artist or an artwork. The lack
of dominant tendencies or art movements has long been associated with
postmodern times and the belief in individual value systems has often
been stated.
As we know, it is not the center that generates new impulses, rather
it confines to summing up and distributing the former as they were
experimented in the laboratories of the peripheries. The periphery
may mean the repressed, the excluded, the marginal, the customary,
the unnoticed, etc. Its content is fairly relative. It is ultimately
a matter of context and positioning. In this respect, the atypical
differs from the peripheral in that it becomes perceptible as something
falling out from such an order of things that has acquired a certain
visibility. Sometimes atypical solutions fill in different voids whereas
certain art practices are simply judged as being excentrical. Though
the two phenomena differ in terms of position, they are interrelated
inasmuch as things being (momentarily) out of focus are often the
hotbed of the atypical.
