ŠTEPÁNKA ŠIMLOVÁ
1966, Prague. Lives and works in Prague

People who are interested in freedom, the true freedom, must first
change the content by means of style. If the style is really masterful, fluent and perfect, if it is changeable and rounded off concurrently, they may raise it over the content. They may let in snatches of colours, electricity, and light. The content is what one keeps in mind, but does not put up for show. But I like show.
Stars are mere projection of the human soul, but at the same time they are quite real. What remains if you deduct qualities from a subject? You will keep just a hole in the sky. But what is it, the thing exactly that has the particular qualities.
Theories of racial memory and unconscious of appurtenance to a community, myths so complex, penetrating so deep, so symbolically revealing… I really cannot explain to myself how the human — or animal — or other — intelligence can access such material. Maybe some form of memory has really to do with it.
