Jukka Korkeila
1968, Hämeenlinna, Finland. Lives and works in Helsinki and Berlin

One easily gets perplexed, even overwhelmed, when confronted with the extravagant visual environment created by Korkeila, which is like a sound unheard, with familiar fragments picked up from here and there. It feels as if Korkeila does not want us to forget the sense of awkwardness
of looking at art. Instead, he prefers to leave us with the feeling that fills us when seeing the painting for the first time.

Korkeila’s paintings have an almost ecclesiastical quality. They are like
a fire-and-brimstone sermon with a curious undertone of omnipresent
divine grace. In them, man is seen as a carnal event, unfolding according to the dictates of desires and needs. Crude issues burst forth through
flowery phrases and a veneer of refinement. Our turns of phrase are
subject to certain norms, but conflict lies in the choice of topic. A parallel phenomenon might be for a newsreader to use newsroom tones to read out someone’s private diary, or for lyrics in a lieder recital to be taken from a porn magazine. It’s this controversial quality which not only lends these paintings their spirit, expression, and pathos, but which also lets them breathe. Where the sophisticated, refined overall impression tunes into tradition, beauty, and shoothingly rhythmical surfaces with delicately attuned colors,
the astringent, absurd, and grotesque qualities of the details create a resounding counterpoint. This creates space and air within the image.
