1963, Isle of Man, UK. Lives and works in Santa Barbara

My recent body of work entitled “Liquid Landscapes” developed out of earlier explorations of the liquidity of the material, using its physicality to convey a visceral presence. At that time the work was highly textured so that the surface was emphasized. However as I experimented with the various viscosities of paint (and as a way of shifting away from the reference to the body), I became interested in a landscape format, as it allowed for more spatial variations and mnipulation of depth and scale. Also it seemed more appropriate to my interest in chaos theory which has continued to be a recurring theme in my work.
The landscape imagery lends itself to this idea, in that all matter is formed and disintegrates according to natural forces or man’s intervention; mountains erode, or are made by landfill; rocks turn to dust or are formed into walls; water forges valleys, etc. It is this constant flux and mutability that defines all life. The intersection of nature and culture is manifested in the use of artificial color schemes from popular culture such as ‘60s super graphics, the Simpsons cartoons and mapping/color-coding systems.
By synthesizing the ‘artificial’ with the ‘natural’ I am not trying to polarize these apparent extremes as a postmodern strategy but I am rather trying to promote the idea of integration, diminishing extremism — tendencies that Western culture, politically and historically, has continually perpetuated.
