ZHANG QI-KAI
1967, Pechino. Lives and works in Milan

In Midday Midnight time goes by, even if in opposite directions, in the Garden of Zen, time stops becoming the metaphor for human existence.
A small stretch of sand on which dried flowers rise, is the sign of devastation; only a skull over which two stag beetles fight the evidence of human presence.

A type of “memento mori” played on a refined symbolism. The stag beetles are in fact insects with guite an adaptability to extreme life conditions they were born before us and will probably survive us. The key to interpreting the work is precisely the fight. The animals become a type of allegory for human beings and their desire for power that will lead them to extinction sooner or later.
