LEMON BAR
Site Sensitive and Context specific Art from Slovakia
(Curated by Juraj Carny and Lydia Pribisova)Contemporary Slovak art is changing. During the '90s, Slovak artists, captivated by world events, did not touch on local themes and even tried to avoid taking political or social stands.
Sporadically, gradually, Slovak artists have begun responding to global and domestic political issues. More and more artists are addressing an increasingly wide range of topics and attitudes.
The Slovak section of praguebiennale 3 includes the work of Slovak artists who deal with explicitly political themes. The section also includes the work of artists employing more latent or implicit means to address issues of society and power. In this sense the title “Lemon Bar” has to be considered: a fresh (Lemon) and young (Bar) wave of Slovak creativity focused on political and social issues such as the presidential speech podium-like interactive installation of Juraj Dudas, the existential sprayed declaration of Martin Freso or the Matus Lanyi canvases with slogans painted like a Windows software banner: another meaning of ‘expanded painting’.
